Padres Continue to Compete

After an eventful two months, the San Diego Padres are competing. Currently, the Padres are two games over .500, and they are in second place in the NL West. While standings are too early to look at, it should be noted they are one game back of the second wild-card spot. Several bright spots have emerged in the young season. The Padres have a couple of Rookie of the Year candidates, and the best closer in baseball. If San Diego can continue this pace, they will finish over .500 for the first time since 2010.

As for right now, San Diego concluded a six-game road trip with the AL East. The Padres won the first series against the Blue Jays but lost the second series against the Yankees. All in all, San Diego finished the road trip at 3-3. The Padres will now begin a lengthy homestand for ten games all against NL East opponents. Those NL East opponents are the Marlins, Phillies, and Nationals respectively. Of the three teams, San Diego has only faced the Nationals, and they won the series.

The most interesting aspect of this season will be the trade deadline in July. If San Diego is still contending, they will have some decisions to make. They can start to make moves this summer, or they could wait and choose to make their moves in the offseason. San Diego still has the number one ranked farm system in MLB as well.  Whatever the organization plans to do, Padres fans should enjoy the ride going forward because San Diego is coming. The start of the 2019 season has shown San Diego can compete.
