Padres Come Up Short Vs Cubs

On Saturday afternoon, the Padres lost to the Cubs by the score of 5-4. San Diego found themselves trailing 5-0 early in the ballgame. The Padres attempted to rally back, but they fell short for the second time in as many days. San Diego’s starter Walker Lockett had some command problems, as he gave up five earned runs in the second inning. As a whole for his start, Lockett allowed five earned runs over five innings pitched. The remainder of the game was in the hands of the San Diego bullpen. Reliever Jose Castillo was notable as he pitched his way out of a bases-loaded jam when there was no one out. In general, the bullpen was good once again as they held the Cubs to five runs.

As San Diego’s offense, they scored when they could. Catcher Austin Hedges continued his impressive series, hitting a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Center fielder Manuel Margot maintained his consistency when he drove in a run during that same inning. The final run came from a sacrifice fly from Austin Hedges in the sixth inning. As a result of dropping two of the first three games of the series, the Padres will look to split with the Cubs.

Up next for San Diego, the Padres will conclude their series with the Cubs on Sunday afternoon. Sunday’s game will be the third straight day game in the series. The Padres will send to the mound left-hander Joey Lucchesi. Lucchesi was originally going to start Saturday’s game, but he could not due to a stomach illness. So far this season, Lucchesi 5-6, with an earned run average of 3.74. San Diego will be satisfied should they split with the Cubs as they are 1-5 against them in the season series.

One interesting story for the Padres going forward is the waiver deadline this month. Should the right deal come to fruition, San Diego could very well move a bullpen piece.
