On Monday evening, the San Diego Padres were dealt with the tough task of facing New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom. Fortunately for San Diego, the Mets defense factored into the ballgame. The Mets were ahead 1-0 in the fifth inning when one of the key defensive miscues took place. Padres third baseman Christian Villanueva hit a routine fly ball to right field when Mets outfielder Jose Bautista dropped it. Villanueva came around to score later on in the inning on a Freddy Galvis single. San Diego then took the lead with a Manuel Margot triple. The Mets had another error in the next inning when Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer hit a chopper to short. The ball was misplayed and rolled into center field allowing Wil Myers to score.
As for San Diego’s starting pitcher Joey Lucchesi, he went five and one-third innings pitched, giving up two earned runs and striking out six. Craig Stammen relieved Lucchesi in the sixth inning and was able to work out of a bases-loaded jam. Stammen also pitched a scoreless seventh inning. Phil Maton came on in the eighth inning and was able to maintain the lead, thus setting up the Padres new closer Kirby Yates. Yates. Yate was able to overcome an error in the inning and notch the win for the Padres.
Up next for San Diego, they will play the second of three games against the Mets. Should the Padres win, they will win their first series since June 11-13th. San Diego will send to the mound left-handed pitcher Eric Lauer. Lauer is 5-6 with a 4.87 earned run average this season.
