Padres Beat Cubs 6-1

On Thursday evening, the Padres broke out offensively in the Windy City, as they beat the Cubs 6-1. San Diego not only hit well, they also pitched well. Padres starting pitcher Robbie Erlin threw five scoreless innings, holding the Cubs to only two hits in the process. The bullpen would continue to pitch well for San Diego, as they handled the last four innings of the game. Relief pitcher Jose Castillo was impressive once more, as he pitched a scoreless sixth. Left-hander Matt Strahm took care of business when he pitched a scoreless seventh. Right-hander Craig Stammen was also dominant in the eighth, continuing the streak of scoreless innings for Padres relief pitchers. The last reliever to appear for the Padres was Phil Maton. Maton pitched a scoreless ninth, securing the win for San Diego.

San Diego’s offense was equally impressive. The star of the game was catcher Austin Hedges. Hedges collected three hits, and three runs batted in. One of the hits, was a three-run home run that was crushed to left field, give the Padres a 3-1 lead. San Diego did not look back from there. Center fielder Manuel Margot had three hits and drove in a run.  The other run batted in came from the first baseman Eric Hosmer, when he singled to center. The 6-1 victory snapped a seven-game losing streak, San Diego.

Up next for San Diego, the Padres will continue to play against the Cubs Friday afternoon. San Diego will send to the mound Tyson Ross. This season, Ross is 6-8 with a 4.41 earned run average.
