Padres Acquire Four Players via Rule 5 draft

@Padres

The San Diego Padres closed the winter meetings yesterday by becoming very active in the Rule 5 Draft. For those who aren’t familiar this is for teams who don’t have 40 players on their roster. This happened to be the case for the Padres and general manager A.J. Preller acquired four players.

According to Padres reporter Corey Brock, he mentions in his tweet the potential parameters of this move by the Padres.

Prospect pitcher Luis Perdomo is the highlight player of the Rule 5 Draft for the Padres. Perdomo is only 22 and posted an ERA of 3.98 playing in 23 games for two minor league teams. GM A.J. Preller mentioned that Perdomo may have a chance to start come spring training. The acquisition of Perdomo via the Colorado Rockies has people talking quite a bit. This is since he was a prospect of the St. Louis Cardinals and was a projected starter at one point.

The Padres also received Mariners prospect position player 25 year old Jabari Blash. Blash posted a batting average of (.271) and (32) home runs with (81) RBI’s in Double-A, and Triple-A.  Two more pitchers were selected to complete the list of four players taken in the Rule 5 Draft.

Cleveland Indians minor league pitcher Josh Martin pitched very well for Double-A. Martin only 25, went (8-1) with an ERA of (2.27) to go with 80 strikeouts this past season. Lastly the Padres selected 27 year old Blake Smith who is (5-13) with a career ERA of (4.03) through 54 games.

These moves are a step in the right direction. It is hard to say that all four of these players will make the team, but for the moment it does sure up the depth the Padres are looking for. I still expect more moves to surface as the Padres have been busy this winter.
