The Padres had an abundance of outfielders, so it was only a matter of time before A.J. Preller made the move to get rid of one.
Brandon Maurer hasn’t been that stunning in recent seasons but in the second half of the Mariners season he revived himself as a relief-pitcher. “Maurer made 31 relief appearances and had a 2.17 ERA coming out of the bullpen. Maurer had 38 strikeouts in 37 1-3 relief innings.”
According to Yahoo Sports, the Padres and Smith signed an extension deal in July which would allow him to play for another two years. He would be getting $6 million in 2015 and $6.75 million in 2016, with a club option worth $7 million for 2017.
Yahoo Sports also explains Maurer as:
“Maurer throws hard, sitting around 94 mph and hitting as high as 99 mph last season, plus he’s got a changeup that generates a whiffs. He’s the second with-upside reliever the Padres have acquired this week, having traded for the Yankees’ Shawn Kelley on Monday.”
