The MLS announced today that they have renamed the MBP honor to the Landon Donavon MVP Award to acknowledge the LA Galaxy players’ accomplishments in his career.

The LA Galaxy tweeted about the former player:

The former USA player retired at the age of 32, last December. He was able to really make a difference on each team he played for, while also winning a few accolades here and there. One includes the All-Time leading scorer in the history of the league, which contributed to the new award title.

During the MLS SuperDraft today, after announcing the Orlando City to the league, Landon Donavon commented on his achievement:

“I am incredibly honored,” Donovan said. “I will try to live my life in a way that is worthy of having a MVP award named after you.”

Fox Sports reports the following:

“MLS commissioner Don Garber said the league wanted to enshrine Donovan’s achievements permanently after his influential role in the growth of the league over the past decade.

Donovan scored 144 goals, registered 136 assists and won a record six MLS Cups during his 14 seasons in MLS (2001-14).”
