According to U-T San Diego, Eric Weddle‘s head coach, Mike McCoy has been criticizing him for going AWOL from the team.
There is a lot going on with Weddle right now. He is facing a possible $73,000 fine if he chooses not to attend mini-camp in two weeks. Weddle’s agent, David Canter, said the following yesterday:
“He will play his final 16 games as a Charger as a free safety – nothing else, … His going above and beyond for them is why they won’t give him a contract extension.”
This statement came after the Chargers announcement that they will not be negotiating a new deal this year. Which is different from what the team previously said they would do.
“It’s blatantly obvious after me asking the team time and again to extend us that Eric isn’t wanted,” Canter said. “So it’s time for Eric to move on (to) where he can win and is wanted.”
Although sources close to the situation are reporting that the Chargers will be inclined to try to retain Weddle in 2016, the beard is not happy.
U-T San Diego reports the following regarding the situation that has occurred with Mike McCoy:
“Prior to the first organized team activity last Monday, McCoy told the assembled players, in essence, to move on without Weddle, that a player unhappy with his contract shouldn’t bail on his team.
However McCoy’s speech was intended – he declined comment Monday when asked about his remarks to the team – it came across to some veterans as highly inappropriate for a head coach to side with management in such a manner.”
It is stunning that things have even reached this point. Eric Weddle has more than proved himself for this team and things should be looking a little more sunny than they are right now.
