Melvin Upton Jr. Could Be Moved Soon (Maybe)
- Updated: July 23, 2016
As I woke up this morning, I noticed I had three notifications regarding Melvin Upton Jr. The Padres OF is rumored to be on the trade list for a few teams.
You know, like three or four. With none of the deals close to being done, it is unsure of exactly where he may be going, but I will lay it out for you here.
Melvin Upton Jr. is a veteran piece for the Padres and that increases his value on the market. Since being traded to the Padres in 2015, he has posted a .259/.316/.441 slash line through 177 games. He has hit 16 home runs this season, which is his best total since he set a career high of 28 back in 2012.
On Friday the latest was that the Baltimore Orioles had emerged as the front-runners for acquiring Melvin. Ken Rosenthal reported the deal includes Upton and Ubaldo Jimenez, but the Padres are holding off on making the deal official because they want young assets in return for taking on Jimenez’s salary. ($13.5 million) Both Upton and Jimenez are signed through 2017.
Saturday morning the news broke that the Toronto Blue Jays were looking to enter the race for Upton. Another team showing interest is the Cleveland Indians.
If anything else transpires we will let you know right here!
