Malcom Floyd is “Working Extremely Hard” to Return to Action this Season
- Updated: November 24, 2015
While the San Diego Chargers languish towards the bottom of the AFC Conference, Head Coach Mike McCoy seems to be ever the optimist. Instead of focusing on the team’s 2-8 record despite having the number two quarterback in the league in Philip Rivers, McCoy is busy contemplating the return of injured wide receiver Malcom Floyd in hopes he can help the team still win some games.
Floyd sustained a torn shoulder injury in his left shoulder two weeks ago against in a home loss to the Chicago Bears. The injury occurred when he dove for a pass down the sidelines and landed awkwardly on the shoulder. The initial prognosis was that he might miss the remainder of the season. However, it doesn’t appears Floyd is willing to go down so easily.
According to McCoy, “He’s (Floyd) working extremely hard with James (head trainer James Collins), just like everybody else on the football team that’s been dinged at some time or another this year. So we hope to get him back sooner instead later.” One would suspect that the reason Floyd seems so intent on getting back into action before the end of the season might have to do with the fact he announced he would be retiring at the end of the 2015 season. Nobody wants to see their career end with an injury.
Through his 14-year career, Floyd has never been a star player. However, he has been dependable and a great presence on the sidelines and in the locker room, which could explain why coaches and teammates alike are so anxious to see him get back on the field. Future Hall of Fame tight end Antonio Gates counts himself as one person who is hoping Floyd will return this year and/or reconsider retirement.
When speaking to reporters, Gates said “I told him he has to come back. It’s non-negotiable. He has to come back now. It’s Week 9 and he gets hurt — I know he doesn’t want to go out like this. He later added, “I just want to see him back. I genuinely care about the guy, and I’m biased, too. I don’t know what he’s going through. I just want him back. But who knows what the situation is going to be? This is both of our contract years — our last year. So who knows what the future holds for me or him?”
That’s huge praise when one of your teammates steps up and makes a comment like that. If that isn’t enough to inspire Floyd to keep working hard, then there is nothing that’s going to get him back on the field. It’s clear what he and his contributions mean to this team.
On the season, Floyd has caught 21 passes for 409 yards and 3 touchdowns through the first nine games. As a lifelong Charger, Floyd’s best year came last year when he caught 92 passes for 856 yards and 6 TDs. That performance came on the heels of missing 14 games in 2014 due to a neck injury. For his career, the man has caught 312 passes for 5,398 yards and 34 TDs. Perhaps Gates is right. Floyd might have one more good season left in him.
Coming up on week 12, handicappers are busy releasing their NFL best picks and creating a list of NFL consensus picks. This information could prove invaluable as this year’s games have been difficult to handicap. By using several NFL best picks to come up with one or two of the NFL consensus picks, you might land on a game that helps you and your fantasy football or other sports analysis endeavours.
