Magic Speaks About His Departure From The Lakers

Magic Johnson had the final word on his departure and he’s made it clear that it was because of Lakers GM Rob Pelinka. Backstabbing and betrayal was the issue!
Appearing on ESPN’s First Take he revealed all the details of his leaving the
Lakers.

Magic was hearing quotes from basketball people around the league about his work ethics and his attendance at the Lakers facility, all coming from GM Rob Pelinka. “I had several agents calling me, telling me to watch out for this guy,” Johnson told the panel on the show.

In this full hour interview, Johnson explained his reason for leaving the Lakers was on his own terms. “If I had to do this again, I would have done this the same way, with no regrets, I made this decision on what was good for me and I did it my way,” Johnson said.

There have been several people that were giving their opinions about everything in the Lakers front office, including from firing of Luke Walton. Johnson wanted to dismiss Walton and to bring in his own coach. One of the coaches Johnson had in mind was Ty Lue, but it wasn’t because of LeBron James, Johnson thought it was the best move on his part as President Of Basketball Ops and the Lakers at the time.

General Manager Rob Pelinka, Kurt and Linda Rambis, Kobe Bryant, Phil Jackson, and Tim Harris were mentioned as the voices that are influencing Jennie Buss’s decision on all matters in the daily operations of the Lakers. Magic felt as though there were too many people involved that undermined his role as President.

“I will always support the Lakers and will attend all the games.” Johnson expressed and has no bad feelings towards the organization, but feels Jennie Buss should make her own decisions instead of listening to several others. Johnson also mentioned that he was grooming Pelinka for his role as President when he decided to leave.

Johnson’s made the right choice. In all, he was the man that was next to Miss Buss to make the right, fair and hard choices for a team that has been in a tailspin after the death of Jerry Buss. Now we will see how the Lakers can function without the services of Magic Johnson.
