- Updated: June 26, 2019
When the 2019 MLB schedule was announced, this game was circled for the San Diego Padres. The addition of Manny Machado would draw a huge crowd and the eyes of the Baseball world would focus on this night. The Padres won this game 8-3.
Machado returned to Baltimore as a visiting player for the first time of his career to a standing ovation and a great outpouring of cheers from the Orioles fans. A tip of the cap and a wave to the crowd as Machado stood in at the plate for his at-bat resulted in a first-inning strikeout.
Baltimore’s Opener Jimmy Yacabonis won the first meeting in this contest, Machado and the Padres found themselves in an early 1-0 hole. In the second inning, Fernando Tatis Jr. gave the Padres the lead for good with his 9th homer of the season, a two-run 394 ft. shot to center field, scoring Manuel Margot.
The top of the third inning belonged to Manny. Machado wasted no time, taking the first pitch form Yacabonis over the center field wall for his 100th home run at Camden Yards and first as a visiting player. The home run was the longest by any Padre player this season. Machado would finish this game 2-4, with an RBI single in the fourth inning, and later popped out to first.
This game displayed the difference between teams heading in different directions. The Padres are on the rise as a playoff contender moving closer to a Wild Card position. The Orioles rebuilding continues as this team is just trying any combination of players to be serviceable to this major league roster.
The Padres (39-40) will wrap-up this brief two-game series with the Baltimore Orioles (22-57) today at 3:05 pm from Camden Yards. Matt Strahm (2-6, 4.85 ERA) will face the Orioles Dylan Bundy (3-9, 4.59 ERA).
