Richards has just 15 points in 47 games this season. Yesterday the Kings placed Richards on waivers and no one picked him up.
There were trade talks between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Kings for Richards but nothing came out of it. With Richards clearing waivers it shows that he is not worth his 5.75 million dollars.
Clearing waivers means that Richards will be sent down to the AHL Manchester Monarchs. If the Kings wanted to they could move him back up for the playoffs.
The Kings had a chance to use their amnesty provision on Richards to avoid the drama during the last offseason . They chose not too with the hopes that he would be able to turn his game around.
Richards has won two Stanley Cup Finals with the Kings so there is some attachment with him from the fans and the organization.
The Kings will look to start the second half of the season on a high note as they take on the Blackhawks tomorrow night at the Staples Center.
