Now here’s one closer to you if you live in or around the Los Angeles area (sadly unlike me), as the Ontario Reign are in Ontario, California and making their own exciting push in the playoffs. As mentioned above, the Reign are currently the Kings’ ECHL affiliate but will be switched to be their AHL affiliate next season and are currently in the midst of a playoff battle against the Utah Grizzlies, leading the series (as of this writing) by 2 games to 0. If you love the game of hockey then know that this league has some great fast paced hockey … oh and this is also the team that Anze Kopitar‘s younger brother Gasper plays for!
What is both a great thing and a bad thing to know about the ECHL level is that not every player there is going to make it to the NHL, which is a bad thing if you’re that player but a lot of these players already know that and since this is the highest level of professional hockey they are going to reach, they give it their all and more anyway which makes it a great thing to someone watching these exciting games. Some players of course do in fact make it into NHL or have potential to do so, so they also play at the best of their abilities and heart of hearts so they can be noticed by the higher tier Monarchs/AHL and/or the Kings/NHL. That ends up making these games some of the most breathtaking (and at times physically brutal) and entertaining hockey anyone can watch live and all for a cheap price.
This is the Reign’s last crack ever at the Kelly Cup and I think it would also be wonderfully magical if the Reign won the Cup in their last ECHL season as well! The Reign will have played game 3 of this series as of this writing but hopefully they can close out the series in game 4 on Thursday May 7th in Utah. If not, game 5 will be played on Saturday, May 9th also in Utah. GO REIGN GO!!!
Oh, and did I mention this is some GREAT HOCKEY???!!!
So if you do miss watching the Los Angeles Kings than fret no more Kings’ fans. There is still some amazing and anxiety filled Kings’ hockey to watch and be crazy about so that hockey itch can finally be scratched. It might not be the Los Angeles Kings per se as we regularly know them but it’s still Kings’ hockey nonetheless. Please do yourselves a favor and check these tournaments out and support our boys, win or lose, you will not be sorry because this is nothing but great hockey. And whether you decide to shout, “USA! USA!” or “GO CANADA GO,” “GO SLOVENIA GO” or “GO SLOVAKIA GO,” “GO MONARCHS GO” and/or “GO REIGN GO,” we should all remember to still shout one more thing out too because Stanley Cup playoffs or not, these are our players, from our team and from our Kingdom. These are our present and future Los Angeles Kings. GO KINGS GO!!!
