Los Angeles Dodgers Welcome McCarthy, Say Farewell to Wilson
- Updated: December 16, 2014
The Los Angeles Dodgers officially signed Brandon McCarthy to a four-year deal. To make room for McCarthy, the Dodgers designated Brian Wilson for assignment.
Brian Wilson is still owed $9.5 million in 2015, but wasn’t very good in 2014 to say the least. The Dodgers’ biggest nightmare in 2014 was their bullpen and Wilson played a huge part in that.
Wilson had a 4.66 ERA with just one save and 54 strikeouts in 2014. While he had some good games, the majority of the times he came in Dodger fans would be holding their breath as he was incredibly inconsistent.
McCarthy finished the 2014 season with a 4.05 ERA with a record of 10-15 with 175 strikeouts and a 1.28 WHIP. However, when the 31 year old was traded to the Yankees from the Diamondbacks in July, he went 7-5 with an 2.89 ERA.
Last Wednesday night during Winter Meetings, there were numerous reports that the Dodgers and McCarthy were closing in on a deal and now it’s finally been made official. McCarthy is likely to fill in the fourth spot on the starting rotation due to the departure of starter Dan Haren who was traded to Miami alongside Dee Gordon.
McCarthy is a California native, Glendale to be specific. He’s shared his excitement in becoming a Dodger via twitter as it began with his avatar edited with Paint into Dodgers gear.

As the Dodgers add Brandon McCarthy’s strong twitter skills to their team, they hope that his talent comes to LA as well. In a rotation with Kershaw,Greinke, and RYU, McCarthy will have some pretty high expectations to fill.
Also during Winter Meetings, President of Operations, Andrew Friedman made it clear that the Dodgers planned on adding two starting pitchers to the team. With the Dodgers going big, they were in talks with Jon Lester, who is now unavailable due to the fact he signed with the Chicago Cubs, but still can trade for Cole Hamels possibly added in the Jimmy Rollins trade.
Max Scherzer and James Shields are also available. However, Scherzer is likely not the answer as he is demanding Clayton Kershaw money.

The Dodgers have most likely taken care of one of the two starting pitchers they were seeking. Who will be the second?
