On a day that celebrates profession in baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers announced that they will honor the great Jackie Robinson with the first statue at Dodger Stadium.
The day marked the 68th anniversary of Robinson’s debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Every team in the league celebrates the legend because the impact of what Jackie provided for the sport cannot be contained to just one city or team. He opened doors and has held them open for seven generations.
Stan Kasten, the Dodgers’ team president and organization’s CEO, announced that Jackie Robinson will be the first ever player/figure to have a statue at the stadium. What an honor! Especially because Jackie never had the opportunity to play in LA or at the ballpark.
Rachel Robinson said it’s a dream come true for her family.
“I’ve been waiting years and years for this,” Robinson said with a laugh following the announcement on Wednesday. “It’s the fulfillment of a dream.”
Yahoo Sports.com writes the following about the statue:
According to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register, a designer, design and location have not been selected yet, The Dodgers will work directly with Rachel Robinson and the family to finalize those decisions in the coming months, but the project is a full go. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the statue unveiled as part of next season’s Jackie Robinson Day festivities.
This is something that will never be forgotten, and now the tradition lives on! Jackie Robinson will be remembered forever, and the Dodger’s are the ones honoring him!
