Los Angeles Clippers Sign Chuck Hayes

On August 31st the Los Angeles Clippers reached an agreement for a one year deal with veteran big man Chuck Hayes. Hayes, who will be playing on his fourth NBA team since 2005, is quite undersized at just 6’6″ and 240 lbs for an NBA big.

Hayes best season in the NBA came in the 2010-11 season with Houston when he put up career highs in points (7.9) and rebounds (8.1). With his size, Hayes has never really become a defensive powerhouse in the low post and has never averaged more than .7 blocks per game in his career. Hayes’ career averages are as follows:

Points Per Game: 3.7

Rebounds Per Game: 5.0

Blocks Per Game: .4

Free Throw Percentage: 61.8%

Clearly those are not game changing stats for the veteran Hayes, however I feel his presence will be best felt in the locker room. Much like Dahntay Jones and Ekpe Udoh last season, the Clippers and coach/GM Doc Rivers have proven their love for locker room veterans that will improve team chemistry.

Hayes was signed by Los Angeles over fan-favorite and Doc Rivers long-time power forward Glen “Big Baby” Davis. Davis, known for his energy and emotion off of the bench, had been in talks with the Clippers over the last few weeks and apparently Los Angeles found Hayes to be a better fit for the locker room.
