Lob City MVP – Los Angeles Clippers Week One
- Updated: November 5, 2014
The Los Angeles Clippers began the season with high expectations as their ultimate goal is not to just be the top dog in the Western Conference but to also win an NBA Championship. With new owner, Steve Ballmer, enthusiasm for the Clips have never been higher.
So how did the Clips do in the first week? A 3-1 start behind some impressive play by the dynamic duo of Blake Griffin and Chris Paul. Griffin is already averaging 27.5 points per game to go along with already two 30 or more point games.
Chris Paul has also not been too shabby. Averaging his typical 10 assists per game to go along with his impressive defensive IQ to snatch up 2.8 steals per game.
On the Clippers’ only loss for the week, which was against the Sacramento Kings, Griffin struggled with making shots as Kings’ center, DeMarcus Cousins, would have a field day on offense and defense recording 34 points, 17 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
Griffin would be 6-20 from the field while his companion, Paul, would be less aggressive being just 6-12 from the field.
In the Clippers 4th game of the season, against the Utah Jazz, the Clippers would pull out a victory but the Clippers standout player in this one had to be Chris Paul. Paul recorded a triple double having 13 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds. Its not every day when you have a point guard that can snatch up 10 boards over the tall trees in the paint.
Overall, the first week of the season was a good one for the Clips and the Lob City MVP would have to be given to Blake Griffin.
Griffin led the Clippers in points and in total minutes played. Against the cross-town rivals, the Lakers, Griffin would have his best game of the week totaling 39 points and would be an impressive 11-12 from the free throw line.
An honorable mention does have to go to the Clippers’ 6th man, Jamal Crawford, who would be 2nd on the team in scoring with 19 per game to go along with a 94% free throw percentage, 4 assists per game, and almost 2 steals per game. What holds Crawford back this week is a bruised rib injury that limited Crawford in one game and kept him out another.
For a team that’s looking to make it to the top of the Western Conference this year, starting out the season with 3 wins and only 1 loss to Western Conference foes is definitely putting the Clips on the right track.
