- Updated: March 1, 2017
The Los Angeles Lakers lost a late lead vs the Charlotte Hornets Tuesday night at the Staples Center and were unable to recover, dropping a 109-104 contest.
Julius Randle went off for Los Angeles, dropping 23 points on 10-14 shooting to go along with 18 boards, six assists, three steals and two blocks. D’Angelo Russell fell an assist short of a double-double, but tallied 23 of his own on 8-17 shooting including 5-8 from deep. Nick Young hit five triples and finished with 15 points.
Jordan Clarkson was a big factor off the bench, per usual. He finished with 16.
For Charlotte, Kemba Walker led the way with 30 points on 9-18 FG (5-9 3-pt FG). He was a perfect 9-9 from the charity stripe. Frank Kaminsky III chipped in with 24 points and 12 boards to cap a double-double.
Just nine Hornets saw playing time on the evening.
Despite the loss, the Lakers finished with the edge in FG percentage, edging the Hornets, 49% to 45%. Charlotte won the rebounding battle, 55-45, and turned it over on two fewer occasions. It was a relatively clean and well-played game with just 26 giveaways total between the two teams.
The Hornets doubled up the Lakers in terms of the offensive rebounding battle, 12-6.
Kemba Walker went on a personal 5-0 run in the closing minutes of the fourth to erase Charlotte’s one-point deficit and turn it into a four-point advantage. From there, the Hornets closed it out at the free throw line and escaped Los Angeles with a W.
Final score: Charlotte 109, Los Angeles 104.
