On Sunday, The Los Angeles Rams experienced one of the most unusual weeks in the NFL. They started with one of their worst performances in recent years. The Rams lost 45-6 to the Ravens in Los Angeles on Monday Night Football. Later on in the week, the Rams traveled to Arizona where they defeated the Cardinals 34-7. Not only did the Rams win, the Vikings lost as well. As of right now the Rams are in the hunt trailing the Vikings for the #6 seed in the NFC. If the Rams can continue their current momentum going forward, they will have a legitimate chance to make the playoffs.
One major obstacle facing the Rams however, is the strength of schedule. With four games left to play, the Rams will have to face the Seahawks, Cowboys, 49ers, and Cardinals. As a result of the scheduling, and how everything has played out this year, the Rams have the toughest remaining schedule in the NFL. Three of those teams are at a .500 record or better, and they have to play two of them on the road. On top of having to travel, their remaining schedule includes to teams who are leading their divisions.
As for the Vikings, their schedule is far more favorable. They will go on to play the Lions, Chargers, Packers, and Bears. Of those teams, three of them are at or under .500. The Vikings will also get to host three of those games as well. Their only remaining road game on the season is against the Chargers. The Vikings sit at 8-4 which gives them a one game lead over the Rams in the wildcard standings. Even after the loss to the Seahawks this past week, Minnesota has put themselves in a good chance to succeed.
However, if any team can overcome this type of adversity, it is the Rams. While this season has been frustrating at times, the Rams have found a way to push through it. As a result of their coaching and preparation, they are still 7-5 on the season. As long as the Rams finish strong, they will have their third consecutive winning season. In addition to winning seasons, if the Rams can win a wild card spot, Los Angeles will make the playoffs for the third straight season as well.
While the Rams may not have a playoff spot yet, there is plenty of reason for optimism. December separates the contenders from the pretenders. The coming weeks will be crucial, but all the more fun to watch. As for the Rams, their next game will take place this upcoming Sunday at the Coliseum. Los Angeles will host the Seahawks on Sunday Night Football. So far, on primetime games, the Rams are 2-2. The last time these two teams played each other, resulted in a win for the Seahawks 30-29.
