LA Kings Win 6th Game In A Row, Down Jets 4-1

Every year I look forward to AMC’s Fear Fest, most particularly the Friday the 13th movie marathon.  Hardly anything can pull me away from binge watching these classic cheesy, low-budget slasher films that probably have the worst case of poor story continuity of any film series that I have ever seen.  One thing that can take my attention away from these nostalgic gems is of course a Los Angeles King game, and like the menacing unkillable villain/anti-hero Jason Voorhies, the LA Kings have also become unkillable as of late by winning their sixth straight game after beating the tough Winnipeg Jets 4-1.

Shortly after the game started, Winnipeg forward Bryan Little received the puck in the King’s zone.  I pointed out to my wife that Little is from our hometown of Cambridge, ON and used to play for the local … OMG he just tried to score on the Kings!  TRAITOR!!! Luckily for me and my superstitious Kings fan ways, goalie Jonathan Quick easily made the save so I stressed there for nothing but immediately I made a mental note to NEVER mention this player’s name out loud ever again.  It was just too risky.  My wife looked at me weird and pointed out that it’s probably NOT a good idea for me to binge watch the Friday the 13th series before watching a Kings game as it makes me too jumpy during the game.  What is she talking about? Like who’s jumpy?  Not this guy!  And with that said I am totally ignoring and am not scared of that strange and creepy noise that I just literally heard come from outside my window just 5 seconds ago. Not scared at all. But seriously, what the HECK WAS THAT NOISE???

<clears throat while eerily looking around the room>

Anyways, speaking of Quick, a funny moment happened later in the period when a Jets player collided with Drew Doughty and they crashed into the net, knocking it off its bearings.  No call was made on the play but for whatever reason “Quickie” thought that there was going to be a penalty called on the Jets player, so he dashed towards the bench and got off the ice as fast as he could, thinking that Coach Darryl Sutter was going to send out the extra attacker.  Since there was no penalty called, it just looked like Quick just ran out of the net for no reason.  No harm came from the play and the King’s players had a good laugh about it.  I didn’t see Quick laugh though, which is great in my opinion as an angry Jonathan Quick is a great Jonathan Quick.  I don’t even think Jason Voorhies would want to mess with an angry Quick so watch out Winnipeg!

And with that said, of course the Jets were the first to get on the board in the second period when Nilolaj Ehlers scored with a wrist shot at 8:45.  The Kings answered back after Captain Dustin Brown skated into the Jet’s defensive zone and cut inside the middle to take a shot but the puck was blocked and bounced towards the blue line where Jake Muzzin flew in out of nowhere and slap shot (not Paul Newman) the puck right into the net at 15:50.  Props must be said of Milan Lucic who was perfectly screening the Jets goaltender Ondrej Pavelec.  Winnipeg head coach Paul Maurice thought that maybe it was too perfect of a screen and seemed to be signaling for a “COACHE’S CHALLENGE” believing that Pavelec was interferred with.  The referee’s either denied the challenge or completely ignored it, I’m not sure as the TSN (I live in Canada) commentators seemed to also be confused by it and the game resumed. I’m thinking that the ref’s possibly just didn’t hear or see Maurice as they were busy watching AMC’s Fear Fest, checking out the best part of Friday the 13th part 3!  Which  is when Jason first puts on his iconic hockey MASK! Why a hockey mask you obviously asked very passionately and loudly? WELL BECAUSE HE’S A HOCKEY FAN! I KNOW RIGHT!? LIKE WHAT’S NOT TO LOVE ABOUT THESE MOVIES???

Anyway, The Jets had some Grade A opportunities to take back the lead but Quick (wearing his own version of a hockey mask) shut down the door time after time (not Cyndi Lauper).  The most impressive was at the 18:12 mark when the puck took a strange bounce and landed out in front of Quick and Jets (giant) defenseman Tyler Myers took a point-blank shot with it, forcing Quick to defy gravity by doing one of his trademark spilt (or spalt?) pad saves to save the day.  This save is a must for tonight’s highlight reel.

Quick Winnipeg

The action picked up in the 3rd period with both teams going back and forth with some exciting action.  The Kings took the lead at 15:19 when Tyler Toffoli picked up the puck right after it was won by a Jet forward and made a 2 on 1 rush with Milan Lucic.  Forced to skate to the outside due to the coverage of Tyler Myers, “Toff” passed the puck right to Lucic, who directed it into the net. 2-1 LA Kings.

As the game wound down, the Jets pulled Pavelec and turned on the jets (see what I did there?) with the extra attacker.  For a moment, I thought we were going to get a re-play of what happened at the end of the Edmonton game but happily I was wrong when Tyler Toffoli went on a breakaway and scored into the empty net at 19:06 for his 7th goal of the year (and second point of the night).  As I was celebrating the goal and probable sixth straight victory, Trevor Lewis decided to get on the action and also scored into the empty net at 19:33 to make it 4-1 for the Kings, which became the final score.  This officially made it 6 wins in a row for the LA Kings, which is not too shabby considering they lost the first 3 games of the season very badly and there was wide-spread panic as it seemed the whole Kingdom was going to fall apart.  Silly us.

The LA Kings will look to continue their 6 game winning streak by playing against the Nashville Predators on Saturday night, back home at the Staples Center.

And I am … turning the channel back to AMC and watching FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 6 : JASON LIVES!!!  LIKE WHAT BETTER WAY TO CELEBRATE ANOTHER KINGS’ VICTORY THAN TO WATCH MY FAVORITE FRIDAY (NOT ICE CUBE) FILM!!! IT’S THE ONE WHERE TOMMY JARVIS COMES BACK AS A CRAZY ADULT AND ACCIDENTLY RAISES JASON BACK FROM THE DEAD (WHOOPS) BEFORE STOPPING HIM ONCE AGAIN!!! LIKE JASON MUST REALLY HATE THAT GUY?!!! BECAUSE TOMMY NEVER DIES, HE ACTUALLY SURVIVES JASON IN 3 STRAIGHT FILMS, WELL TECHNICALLY TWO AS IT WAS A FAKE JASON IN PART 5 BUT WHATEVER!!!!!

<clears his throat and immediately recomposed himself>

Sorry about that.  The Kings winning their sixth straight game while a Friday the 13th marathon is on at the same time sometimes gets the best of me.  My bad.

I’m out of here.  GO KINGS GO!!!
