LA Kings Suspend Slava Voynov

The Los Angeles Kings announced yesterday that defenseman Slava Voynov has been suspended. A spokesman for the Kings confirmed the decision was made after he sustained an injury outside of “normal hockey training.”

This suspension means that the contract doesn’t count against the Kings salary cap. According to Yahoo Sports, Voynov would bring a $4.166 million cap hit throughout four more seasons. As you know, the Kings need as much salary room to wiggle as many of their players are signed to lucrative contracts.

Slava Voynov has already been suspended by the NHL and the Kings earlier this year. The Kings were able to suspend him because of the injury that occurred outside of hockey training, which resulted in him tearing his right Achilles tendon.

He hasn’t played since last October when he was arrested for chargers of domestic violence. He was formally charged with a felony regarding events involving his wife. He is scheduled to stand trial for this on July 6 despite several delays.

The Kings have been without the player for 76 games. Yahoo Sports reports:

“The NHL allowed the Kings to take his contract off their salary cap commitments last season, but the new suspension gives them some financial flexibility heading into the free-agent signing period.”
