The LA Galaxy’s 2016 SuperDraft Pick: Josh Turnley

The 2016 MLS SuperDraft’s third and fourth rounds ended on January 19, 2016. The LA Galaxy had three picks total—first, third, and fourth rounds. LA passed on its Round 1 pick on January 14, 2016. That day still turned out to be quite eventful. For a recap, read Connor Aylward’s article, LA Galaxy Add Two Forwards. Five days later, the Galaxy selected one player and passed on its third pick.

As I hoped, the club drafted a defender—Josh Turnley from Georgetown University. He started in his last three seasons (2012-2014) with the Hoyas. LA chose him in Round 3, 42nd pick overall.

Yet, with two international signings practically official (Cole and Van Damme) and one still rumored (De Jong), the Galaxy no longer need more defenders. The club still has Dan Gargan, AJ DeLaGarza, Robbie Rogers, Leonardo, Dave Romney, and Oscar Sorto. LA also signed Daniel Steres and Jeff Larentowicz.

Josh Turnley will assuredly be either transferred or loaned to Los Dos. This move will depend on whether he signs a contract with the second team or with the senior team. The Galaxy acquired Daniel Steres from Los Dos during the offseason. Steres might occasionally still play for them when not utilized by Bruce Arena though. Then, Turnley likely might be a Los Dos sub. Although, as we saw with Romney and Steres, he might play if the Galaxy schedules friendlies against international opponents like last year with Barcelona. Who knows, with preseason matches coming up, he might see some action!

Either way, we should all welcome Josh Turnley to the Galaxy family! I’m excited to see what he brings to both Los Dos and the LA Galaxy. Turnley is excited to join the team, as he should be! As the only Galaxy SuperDraft pick, he received quite an honor. It will be an excellent journey and experience for the young player.
