LA Galaxy Sign Jermaine Jones
- Updated: January 18, 2017
Since the Los Angeles Galaxy acquired the rights to Jermaine Jones from Colorado on December 13th there have been many questions about his arrival to Stub Hub.
Many wondered how he would fit in or how his personality would mesh with the rest of this Galaxy roster. But the question that seemed to loom the most was how much he would cost LA.
The United States Mens National Team player draws plenty of attention due to his strong personality and frenetic playing style. He also usually draws quite a fee. Since joining Major League Soccer in 2014 Jones has been a designated player for both New England and Colorado. So would he take the same status with the Galaxy?
With only Giovani Dos Santos slated as a Designated Player next season the club certainly has the room. But a 35 year-old Designated Player doesn’t exactly follow the youth movement the club vied to be making after the departures of Robbie Keane and Steven Gerrard.

The signing of Jones though wasn’t much of a shock. Jones’ family resides in Los Angeles and he has been making weekly trips back to the area no matter where has has played in the United States. So it seems a comfortable place for the talented midfielder to come play.
Again the question became would it be for the right price?
#LAGalaxy signs MF Jermaine Jones, using targeted allocation money. Terms not announced

With no terms being announced yet the positive Galaxy fans can take is that he was signed using Targeted Allocation Money. Typically “TAM” is not used to bring on a player that would be signed as a Designated Player.
If this is the case and he was brought in at a lesser salary than one that would qualify him as a Designated Player then the Galaxy will have just brought on a potential game-changing midfielder.
When healthy few question the effort and skill Jones possesses. Both of his previous teams have made the playoffs with him put in a leadership role.
Statistically though he doesn’t jump off the page. Only having 5 goals and 6 assists in his 3 seasons in the States. That might be because he has only played in 37 games in those 3 seasons due to lingering injuries, and at 35 years-old it’s difficult to suggest his health will improve.
