LA Galaxy Sign Jeff Larentowicz
- Updated: January 7, 2016
Los Angeles Galaxy have agreed to a deal with MLS veteran midfielder Jeff Larentowicz. Larentowicz, has played for three other MLS clubs including Chicago, New England and a Colorado stint that included a 2010 MLS Cup.
The 32 year old known as “Big Red” will help the Galaxy defensively in the midfield, a spot very similar to one filled by the recently transferred Juninho. Larentowicz has experience playing center back as well and could drop back into the position, however Galaxy Manager Bruce Arena stated the club would use him in the midfield to begin the 2016 season.
Throughout his 11 MLS seasons Big Red has put in 37 goals and has 18 assists. With over 300 MLS appearances and 3 United States Men’s National Team caps he brings plenty of experience to the midfield for Los Angeles.
Larentowicz is very excited to return to Southern California as the Pasadena native expresses here,
“It’s the move that I wanted and the place that I want to go. It was at the top of my list going into the offseason. It took some time, but it eventually worked out. The prestige of the club is something I fully understand,” Larentowicz told LAGalaxy.com. “I absolutely feel like this is an opportunity for me to bounce back. I haven’t been this excited for an MLS season in a long time.”
This move seems very beneficial for Los Angeles whose midfield looked to be a little barren after the move of Juninho. With Larentowicz and Steven Gerrard in the central midfield there is no doubt the Galaxy will benefit from his abilities. Being able to score from set pieces as well as knocking in the occasional long range shot will be added bonuses to the opportunity he brings players like Gerrard and Robbie Keane in front of him with his passing. Big Red speaks of how he intends to play around such talent,
“The job that I like doing is to allow the talented attackers to do their thing and to save themselves so that when we do get the ball they can create chances and goals,” Larentowicz said. “I’ll be in the role of winning the ball and give it to the guys who can create the goals. Defensively, I’ll probably be the fifth defender in the back and the connector between the backline and the guys going forward.”
With many more moves on the horizon for Los Angeles, including players like Ashley Cole and former Galaxy player Mike Magee being rumored, there will be plenty more Galaxy news to come during this busy January transfer period but this is certainly a great start for Los Angeles.
