Bryant hurt his shoulder in the Lakers lost to the Pelicans last week. He an MRI the following day and the news came out that he had a torn right rotator cuff.
The surgery will confirm that he will be out for the year. With the Lakers nowhere near playoff contention it will probably be for the best that Bryant sit out the rest of the year.
Reports circulated throughout the day yesterday that there was no question that Bryant would be back next season. Next year will be the final year of his contract.
Lakers head coach Byron Scott spoke to ESPN.com about the situation.
“I think he’s done everything that you can possibly do in this league, and I think at times, we don’t appreciate all the stuff that he’s been able to accomplish,” Scott said. “I don’t think we appreciate how tough he is, all the injuries and other things that he’s played with, to be able to come back the way that he’s come back. I don’t see Kobe as the type of guy that wants to leave his legacy on [these] terms. I think he wants to go out on his own terms. We’ll just have to wait and see.”
The Lakers are now down Julius Randle, Steve Nash, and Kobe Bryant for the season. Tonight they will take on the Wizards in Los Angeles at the Staples Center.
