But do these additions make the Lakers a playoff team? To be honest I don’t think so. Even if everyone on the team stays healthy including Kobe it will be a tough mountain to climb to get back into the playoff. If you just do the eye test on the teams who made the playoffs and who could potentially be dethroned out of that mix there’s probably only 2 teams that don’t make it.
The Dallas Mavericks are hurt after the exit of Tyson Chandler and the change of heart of DeAndre Jordan, and the Portland Trail Blazers have lost their whole team. LaMarcus Aldridge to San Antonio, Wesley Matthews to Dallas, and Nicolas Batum to Charlotte.
Personally I think one of those spots goes to Oklahoma City with Kevin Durant returning from injury. We saw just how good Russell Westbrook is and I think Billy Donovan and the Thunder have a lot to prove.
As much as it pains me to say it. The Sacramento Kings may be able to sneak into that 8th seed. I understand there is more drama in Sac Town than Los Angeles for the first in history but they have the pieces in play to make some noise. The addition of Rajon Rondo and Willie Cauley-Stein seem like perfect fits. Don’t forget about DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay. I saw them live last year and they put on a scoring clinic. With George Karl at the helm they should make some noise as well.
All in all I’m optimistic that the Lakers will have a better product that last season. But I understand that rebuilding takes times. It’s usually a slow process unless you are able to sign a big name free agent and that just hasn’t been the case for the Lakers last few years.
Kobe will still give us all the highlights we can handle next year and I’m excited to see how we fair. What do you think? Can the Lakers make the postseason?
