Kings Proving It’s Better to be Lucky and Good

Now, about the rest of the division: it is atrocious. A foaming, flaming, festering pile of fungal flamingo feces. Here are the ESVA CF% ranks of the Pacific Division teams:

  • Los Angeles: 1st
  • Anaheim: 16th
  • San Jose: 18th
  • Vancouver: 21st
  • Arizona: 23rd
  • Edmonton: 26th
  • Calgary: 27th

So, you have the Kings at the very top, and then every other team in the division below league average. 4 out of 7 Pacific teams are in the bottom 10 and 2 out of 7 are in the bottom 5. How else can I describe how horribad this division is? Let’s put it this way: Micah Blake McCurdy’s projection system Oscar has Anaheim making the playoffs by finishing 3rd in the division with 87 points. This same system projects the Colorado Avalanche to finish dead last in the Central Division… with 87 points.

Pacific Crap

Will the Kings win the division by 20 points? The Kings have yet to go through their annual January swoon, and lots of things can happen between now and April, so probably not. As you can see, Micah projects them to win by about 13 points. But when you’re really good, pretty lucky and play in a dumpster fire of a division, it’s a legitimate possibility. Considering how they won their two Stanley Cups, I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised if their first Pacific Division title comes with some historic superlatives.
