The Los Angeles Kings have had an eventful day today. The news came this afternoon that Justin Williams has backed out of contract extension talks with the Kings, and in return the Kings announce they are in the market for defensemen.

TSN’s Pierre Lebrun had a discussion with Justin Williams’ agent, Thane Campbell. Lebrun reports the following:

“(Campbell told) me on Tuesday that they have shelved talks for the rest of the year – unless of course the Kings are willing to sign off on the offer they have made to the Kings,” LeBrun reported on Tuesday. “They will sign if that offer is accepted.

“Until then they will shelve it until July 1st; they don’t want it to be a distraction.”

If things fall apart between Williams and the Kings, it’ll be a real blow. He is a very versatile player who can play any position effectively meaning he will be a hot item on July 1st.

As for the Kings interest in bringing in new players, they are looking into Marc Methot of the Ottawa Senators, and Andrej Sekera of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Bob McKenzie of TSN reports:

“The (Kings) continue to look for a defenseman,” TSN’s Bob McKenziereported on Tuesday. “They know Slava Voynov isn’t going to be back in the picture anytime soon, if at all.”

“Marc Methot (of the Ottawa Senators) and Andrej Sekera of the Carolina Hurricanes … are two of the defensemen that they are looking at among others,” McKenzie continued.”

Defensemen are definitely things that could help the Kings, and it seems as though they are making the correct moves to remedy the issue.
