Happy 50th LA Kings, and what a way to celebrate half a century of hockey than by hosting the NHL All Star weekend. A weekend so jam packed with events one couldn’t possibly attend them all, but we sure did try! In true LA style, LA Live was decorated to the hilt with custom Hockywood designs such as life sized pucks, human sized dog houses to represent the Habitat for Humanity build, and a sand sculpture with palm trees and stars.
“It’s going really good, ya know,” said Kings broadcasting Legend Bob Miller, of the anniversary. (Miller has been broadcasting for 44 of those 50 years.) “They’ve got a lot of things going on for the 50th, not only with the team, but within the community and the things that they’re doing, and a lot of that has to do with Luc Robitaille and Mr. Anschuntz the owner, and I think that it’s great that all of these teams not only the Kings I think all teams in the NHL give back to the communities in which they play and it benefits all the kids and all the youth and it makes them aware of hockey and maybe makes them want to play, you know, which would be good. I’ve talked to a lot of people saying ‘this is the 50th year of the Kings’ they can’t believe, what? They’ve been here 50 years? I say yes, if you can believe that. It’s been a good run, punctuated by the 2 Stanley Cups in 3 years. That helped everything.”
It’s great for the city, you know,” Miller continues.
“There’s so much going on, so many fans get a chance to come down and see in person some of the players, some of the All Stars, visit with them, and I think any time you can get that interaction of fans and players, which is kind of lost these days because of so much security. It used to be you come out of the Forum or whatever arena you’re in and fans would be there as you walk to your car, and now you know you can’t do that in an of these sports, so it’s important for the fans to be able to interact with the players and just have a celebration for 3 or 4 days. It’s no longer just 1 day of the game, it’s 4 days of interactive situations going on, and that benefits the fans and everybody else.”
This week
end is a long time in the making. “We started working on it a year and a half ago”, said Cheeseman. “When we put the first bid in on it, we came up with a vision at that point. We’re probably on Plan G of what that vision was but you always adapt and move with it, but we’re really excited it’s finally here, fans are going to participate. The entire sport of hockey is here, with the Top 100 players, the legacy of the sport is here in Los Angeles and that’s what we wanted so it’s really cool to have that all come together, and now we’re going to go celebrate.” LA is not the only city celebrating their 50th, in fact it was “very competitive bidding,” according to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. “LA made a compelling case. You can feel the buzz here in LA. The situation, the setup, logistically here in LA Live is perfect for what we’re doing, and I think part of this weekend is a testament to Phil Anschutz’ vision for STAPLES Center and downtown LA.”
