“Jonathan Quit” Hopes What Happens in Vegas Stays There

Jonathan

The good news is we’ve all heard the phrase: “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.”

The bad news is that we have to talk about this.

Something about it just stinks (announcer Jimmy Fox says “stings”). See if we can work our way through this.

After a horrendous start to a game, the Los Angeles Kings fell short once again, this time 4-2 against the Las Vegas Golden Knights. The loss put the 12-6-1 Golden Knights one point behind the 12-7-2 Kings, clinging onto first in the Pacific Division after an impressive 11-2-2 start.

Even though he tallied a shut-out victory last night against the Florida Panthers, backup goalie Darcy Kuemper was “benched” this game for this up-and-comer “greatest goalie in the world” Jonathan Quick. Here’s how that went down in the first period, in succession:
  1. A soft goal on the first shot of the game at 55 – a routine wrister from William Karlsson. This wasn’t the first time Quick has allowed the first shot by him, but something seemed especially lackluster to his “game” already. I screamed, “Pull him! He doesn’t have it.” But no one listened, not even coach John Stevens. He was on the TV screen at the time.
  2. The second goal was another tweener through Quick’s pads as he sat back on his heels or skates. His anemic attempt at putting his glove behind his butt after the puck was in the net was just embarrassing.
  3. The third goal was beyond ridiculous. There was a mix-up behind the net as the normally nifty puck-handling Quick left the puck ALONG WITH HIM behind the net! Here is the worst part: after the misplaced goalie realized Karlsson had the errant puck and would most likely put it in the net, Quick simply stopped the effort before the goal was scored. Maybe tonight he was more like Jonathan Quit! (Oh, let’s not coddle him, OK?)
Goodbye. This latter goal came at 11:22. It’s also when Quick got the hook, replaced by mighty Kuemper, who saved 30 of 30 shots, basically blanking the defense-minded Golden Knights.
To its credit, the Kings team came back with two goals of its own – a backhand shot by Trevor Lewis who found himself alone in front of the net in the second period and a wrist shot from Tanner Pearson in the third from a sharp pass from Adrian Kempe.
Though mostly flat in the third period, the Kings had a couple chances, including a pileup of bodies in the opponent’s crease (with the puck found underneath Nick “Out of Sync” Shore) and then a nice tip shot by Lewis that found no net, just the left post. An empty-net goal by the Golden Knights killed any comeback chances, and Lady Luck ran out in Vegas, where we must promise everyone to NEVER TALK ABOUT THIS TO ANYONE AGAIN.
Luckily, it’s also true that “whoever loses in Vegas gets to leave Vegas.” The Kings next play the Winnipeg Jets at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 22 at the Staples Center. Another shot at redemption. Never say quit!
On a side note: to the underrated Brayden McNabb:  We miss you and your body-leveling checks … though Drew Doughty and Dustin Brown may not have wanted to be reminded of what those checks looked like … and felt like.
