Jared Goff’s Progression
- Updated: August 23, 2016
On Saturday night, Jared Goff took the field and looked like a rookie playing in just his second game of his NFL career. His first pass was a slightly under thrown and the second play he fumbled after tripping his own offensive lineman. Clearly nothing to be excited about well getting some reps with the first unit and if Goff were to tell you himself, he’d probably tell you the nerves kicked in.
The second half Goff got into a rhythm after getting some help from Malcolm Brown and Benny Cunningham who combined to rush for 85 yards. Meanwhile the progression and timing from the rookie quarterback got better throwing the ball over the middle which coincided with hitting Brown for an 11-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Rams coach Jeff Fisher said afterward
“He’s a confident young man. He loves to compete, and anytime a quarterback starts to get in a rhythm and gets an opportunity then good things happen. He had a couple drops that were not his issue, and balls accurately thrown. I was pleased with it.”
Fisher’s patience is a perfect indication of where Goff needs to be. He’s not popping the eyes out of fans like the way Dak Prescott is doing with his preseason on the Cowboys. Goff is simply going through the process of growing as a quarterback in the NFL. No interception or fumble in the preseason has ever been the crystal ball to determine one’s career.
The signs that should be noted is what Goff did after his struggles. During a first half where he turned the ball over and fumbled twice, the second half showed the poise and precision needed to compete.
“I hope to just continue to improve. I don’t want to set any statistical goals for myself,” Goff said. “I just want to continue to improve, and feel more comfortable, and feel confident and more natural. That’s what I think I’ve done up until this point, and just continue that.”
And with that, it wasn’t a performance that was Oscar-worthy. Nothing Saturday gave anyone in attendance that Goff is ready to square off as the starter in the home opener against the Seahawks. Jared Goff wasn’t a blockbuster, but he also wasn’t a flop either.

BUST. Don’t know why this guy was drafted #1 when he never won anything big at the college level. Just show how dumb the NFL scouts are. The Rams will be a perennial loser with Fisher and Snead running the show.

Sure looks like the Rams have answered the call now, surrounding Goff with talented QB gurus. If Goff fails now, it’s on him. Fisher is gone; McVay, LaFleur, Olson, and Taylor are in. He just might bust that bust-label now!
