J.J. Redick Three Ball Key In Clippers OT Win

In the third meeting of the season between the Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets, the Clippers would be looking for their first win against the Rockets. Still without Blake Griffin, the team would at least regain the presence of center DeAndre Jordan in the post against the always challenging Dwight Howard. J.J. Redick would have himself a career night but we’ll get to that shortly.

The first quarter went back and forth early, but the Clippers were able to establish a steady lead thanks to a 10-0 run in just 53 seconds. A Redick 4-point-play helped continue the run as the club thrived shooting the ball. Jordan looked effective early in his first game back after missing a couple with Pneumonia but was subbed out early as Head Coach Doc Rivers seemed concerned about his fatigue. Los Angeles would lead to end the first quarter 33-21 and would be helped by a 70% (7-10) three point percentage and a 15 point quarter for Redick who himself knocked in 4 of those three balls.

Houston started to gain ground in the second as a rough start to the quarter for the Clipper bench that included numerous turnovers allowed them right back into the game with a 13-5 run. The Rockets would get as close as 4 with just over eight minutes to go but thanks to some stellar shooting from Wes Johnson in the left corner, where he knocked down three threes in this quarter alone, the Clippers would stretch the lead back out to 8. Jamal Crawford would also make his usual highlight reel ankle-breaker as the Clippers worked to regain that lead.

Los Angeles ended the half with a franchise record for three pointers made in a half with a total of 12 as the team took a 59-52 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The hot shooting didn’t go anywhere in the third quarter for the Clippers. Who else but J.J. Redick got Los Angeles going as he dropped in a few more threes just for good measure tying his career record with 8 and also had 29 points to end the quarter. Paul Pierce also chipped in some clutch shooting for the Clippers as everything seemed to be rolling in the team’s direction offensively. With just one more quarter of play left Houston managed to stay within range but Los Angeles held a comfortable 94-80 lead.

“Lawler’s Law” was reached by the Clippers with just over nine minutes to go in the fourth as the club led by 11 at the time. The Clipper bench was able to hold the lead for the starters to begin the final quarter as the turnover problem seemed to finally disappear from the second unit. However once the starters checked back in the Rockets started to fight back and get an 8-0 run making it only a 6 point game with just over seven minutes remaining. Almost on cue Chris Paul caught fire from beyond the arc, knocking in two clutch threes on back to back possessions that helped his team regain a steady lead of 14 points with four to go and a play like this one didn’t hurt the team’s momentum either.

Houston went on a run of their own late in the quarter as they were not going to let the Clippers run away with this one. The Rockets would knock in some clutch shots late, particularly Marcus Thornton would sting and tie this one at 122 with just seven seconds to go. After a missed deep two from Chris Paul this one was headed to overtime.

Crawford got the Overtime period going with a three ball and J.J. Redick followed him up with another of his own as Los Angeles jumped out to a 6 point lead early on before a timeout from Houston. Crawford would knock in one clutch shot after another as he helped the Clippers hold on and win this one 140 – 132.

JJ Redick had himself a night ladies and gentleman as he ended the night having a season-high in points with 40 and his career-high and franchise record in threes with 9. Chris Paul and DeAndre Jordan would each end the night with double-doubles, Paul with 28 points and 12 assists and Jordan with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Wesley Johnson and Jamal Crawford would be key off the bench as they were each in double-digits scoring. The team would also set a franchise record for three pointers made in a game with an amazing 22!

The next game for the Clippers will be against Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday night also on TNT at 5 PM Pacific. Thanks for reading along Clipper fans and come back to CaliSportsNews for all your Clipper coverage.
