Ivica Zubac Showing More Than Expected
- Updated: January 28, 2017
As second round picks go there were questions surrounding rookie Lakers center Ivica Zubac when he first entered the NBA. At first glance the 19-year-old from matched the essentials in terms of size and length. But with inconsistent production from the Lakers big, Mozgov has gone from D-League project to a player whose recent game is demanding more minutes.
In the past five games Zubac’s production and stock has increased by putting up double doubles in three of those contests. He added another solid performance to his resume with 16 points and 10 rebounds in last night’s loss to the Utah Jazz. An array of steady quickness, inside game, mid-range shooting and the floor awareness on both ends of the floor could make the Lakers future feel very bright even in the current gloom.
Zubac’s recent play hasn’t gone unnoticed by head coach Luke Walton who said he was “thrilled” by both his play and that of Brandon Ingram. Even with the recent trend of consistency in the paint whether Walton will eventually put him into the starting lineup is up for discussion. But why not? The Lakers are the second worst team in the NBA when it guarding centers. Zubac could be the answer Walton has been looking for.
