Robbie Erlin is one of the top pitching prospects in the San Diego Padres organization. He’s put in two strong starts in Triple-A El Paso and many people are starting to get the feeling that his next stop could be in the Padres rotation at some point soon rather than later. As much promise as he’s shown as of late is he really ready for another shot in the big leagues?
I’m not quite sure about all that. Erlin, was a 3rd round of the Texas Rangers back in 2009. Originally from Oakland California, Erlin spent two seasons in the Rangers organization before being traded along with Joe Wieland in the Mike Adams trade back in 2011.
He spent two seasons in the minors before being called up in 2013. In 2013 he made 11 appearances, 9 starts and posted a 3-3 record with a 4.12 ERA. In 2014, he appeared in 13 games and started in 11 games. He posted a 4-5 record with a 4.99 ERA.
The ERA has been the problem for Erlin. So far in 2015 in Triple-A he has 3-1 record with a 4.50 ERA. After a shaky first two start of the 2015 campaign Erlin has came on strong.
In his last two starts he has pitched 12 innings combined allowing just 2 earned runs. He is not a strikeout pitcher to say the least and does surrender a lot of hits. He has allowed 28 hits in 22 innings of work at the Triple-A level this season. If he wants to be successful at the next level he needs to figure out how to produce more outs.
In the big leagues you don’t have to be a David Price or Corey Kluber to be successful. You need to be able to get outs in timely situations and avoid pitching in the stretch as much as possible. For a young pitcher like Erlin I would like for him to solve this issue of allowing tons of hits before he gets called up to the Show.
