Hollywood Blvd. News – San Diego Padres Edition

We like to start our day searching the web and reading articles about our beloved LA sports teams. For this edition, let’s dive into the news surrounding the San Diego Padres.

The visiting San Diego Padres exploded for ten runs on fourteen hits and defeated the Colorado Rockies 10-3 on Wednesday afternoon in Cactus League action:

“Thirteen different Padres recorded hits on the afternoon, with only Carlos Quentin having a multi-hit game, but timely at-bats and a big eighth inning that included a pinch-hit grand slam home run put the game out of reach of the Rockies, who have now been blown out on two consecutive spring days.

Tyson Ross started for the Padres and allowed three runs on three hits and a walk in 3.2 innings, while striking out five hitters.

Rockies outfielder Drew Stubbs hit a solo home run off Ross in the bottom half of the inning to give the Rockies, who had been held to no runs and two hits the day before against the Angels, an early 1-0 lead.”

The San Diego Padres kicked off their Cactus League schedule as they played two games with their companions at Peoria Sports Complex, the Seattle Mariners:

“Sure, 2013 Jedd Gyorko had a 23.4% strikeout rate, but he was seeing big league pitching for the first time, and remember, he clubbed 23 homers playing his home games in cavernous Petco Park! Best of all, the Padres (who would finish ten games under .500 at 76-86) went 60-63 in his starts. There’s no doubt 2013 Jedd Gyorko made the team better.

And then, we met 2014 Jedd Gyorko. This version of Gyorko cut down his strikeout rate (slightly) to 22.6%, but that’s about the only thing he improved on from 2013’s campaign. 2014 Jedd Gyorko only hit .210/.280/.333 in 443 PAs, only launched 10 home runs, and earned a net negative WAR (-0.5) and dWAR (-0.8).”
