The San Diego Padres have announced that they will be playing an exhibition spring training game next year along with their Triple-A affiliate.
The Padres will be visiting the El Paso’s Southwest University Park on March 31, 2016, in El Paso Texas. This isn’t a usual trip for a major league team.
The San Diego Padres CEO and President says the following about it:
“Southwest University Park is one of the best venues in Minor League Baseball, and we know the fans in El Paso create an unforgettable game environment here. The players and coaches who have played here in the past are looking forward to returning, and those who have not are looking forward to experiencing it firsthand, as we make our first trip to El Paso.”
The interim manager, Pat Murphy, was a previous manager for the Chihuahuas in 2014. He said the following in a press release:
“All baseball fans should go to El Paso and see what they have going on there,” Murphy said Wednesday afternoon. “Just the setting, the setup, the stadium, the amenities, the amenities for the players – it’s first-class. It’s a mini-major league environment. … It’s a great baseball setting, a great little baseball town to hold an exhibition game.”
