The Los Angeles Kings’ 4-1-1 record to begin the 2014-15 season is deceptive, according to Vinh Cao of Bleacher Report.
“L.A.’s early-season doldrums are nothing new, but its horrid possession numbers are.
Through six contests, the team ranks 23rd in the league in Corsipercentage at 47.6. In 2013-14, the Kings sat atop the NHL at 56.8 percent.
Injuries and fatigue from three straight lengthy playoff runs are likely contributing to this dip in play, but it remains a cause for concern.
To this point, Quick has allowed the club to stay afloat with stellar goaltending. The former Conn Smythe Trophy winner hasn’t looked this calm and assured in net since the 2013 postseason, when he posted a 1.86 goals-against average and .934 save percentage.
At present, he sports a 1.86 GAA and .951 save percentage.
One of his most noticeable issues last year was an inability to consistently find pucks through traffic. In 2014-15, the acrobatic netminder has tracked plays superbly.”

The goalie known for evading the spotlight, Jonathan Quick, had no choice but to embrace the love last night as he broke the Los Angeles Kings 36-year-old record for shutouts.
“Jonathan Quick made 29 saves to set the club record with his 33rd career shutout and to add to the celebration, the LA Kings beat the Sabres 2-0 last night to make it their fifth consecutive win.
Quick was hardly tested in the race for most shutouts. He pulled ahead of Rogie Vachon with his second in three games. The Kings are the NHL’s best defensive team last season, and they have only allowed three goals on their way to winning the first five games of its six-game homestand.
“A shutout, it takes 20 men to do that, to shut a team out for 60 minutes, so I’m very grateful to my teammates over the years,” Quick said. “It’s over now. We’ll keep playing. … It’s more about what as a team we’re able to do, but I know what Rogie achieved and what he meant to this team and this city.”
Although the spotlight was on a positive achievement for Jonathan Quick, the missing Slava Voyanov could not be ignored. Jeff Carter and Anze Kopitar took over for the team and scored power-play goals for the defending champions in their first game since the Kings defenseman Slava Voynov was suspended indefinitely by the NHL”
