Galaxy And Sounders Play To Draw In Seattle

Galaxy

Sigi Schmid’s return to Seattle was an eventful affair.

The Los Angeles Galaxy drew the Seattle Sounders 1-1 at Centurylink Field on Sunday night in a match that featured seven yellow cards and a red. Both sides can claim to have deserved the victory but the rivals have to settle for a point each.

An injury-filled Galaxy lined up with Jermaine Jones wearing the captain’s armband in the midfield as the Dos Santos brothers and Gyasi Zardes started against the reigning MLS Cup champions.

Both sides had early chances but neither could capitalize. Romain Alessandrini had the closest chance of the early part of the match as he hit a ball from outside the box but Stefan Frei tipped the shot over the bar.

In the 25th minute, the Galaxy struck through Zardes for the second week in a row.

Jonathan Dos Santos moved through the midfield, played the ball wide to Alessandrini, who crossed it with his weaker right foot and found Zardes for the header in the center of the box.

Only two minutes after the goal, Galaxy goalkeeper Jon Kempin went down with an injury that might have occurred originally after a collision with Nicolás Lodeiro. Brian Rowe replaced him.

Jermaine Jones was booked in the 34th minute after bringing down Clint Dempsey and will miss the game next week against Toronto for yellow card accumulation. Rowe brilliantly saved the ensuing free kick.

Bradley Diallo was also yellow carded after a trailing arm appeared to contact Victor Rodriquez in the face, who let out a yell as he hit the turf.
At halftime, the Sounders had 56.7 percent of the possession but the Galaxy led 1-0 while being outshot 11-4. Each team had two shots on target.

After the intermission, the Sounders began to attack again but failed to muster any chances that challenged Rowe.

Alessandrini was booked after accumulating fouls.

Then, trouble struck for the Sounders as Jordan Morris pulled up with a right hamstring injury, which was announced as a right hamstring strain and was taken off for Will Bruin.

Oniel Fisher was then booked for a challenge on Alessandrini and Fisher was immediately subbed out.

Then, Osvaldo Alonso bit down on Emmanuel Boateng and earned a booking. Zardes was also booked for kicking away the ball after an offside whistle had blown.

The Sounders equalized in the 85th minute as a first-time cross cross found Lamar Neagle at the top of the box, who struck home a deflected shot beyond Rowe.

In the 89th minute, Jones was sent through for the Galaxy and Roman Torres tripped him up and received a red card.

With six minutes of stoppage time, the Sounders had to play with 10 men.

Giovani Dos Santos hit the wall on the free kick from Toress’ red-card foul.

Neither side could net a late game-winner and the match finished 1-1. The Galaxy next take on Toronto FC on Sept. 16.
