Galaxy Fight Back To Draw Fire 2-2

Galaxy

With just 2 victories and 7 points through 8 matches played, the Los Angeles Galaxy needed to make something happen at home Saturday night as they took on the Chicago Fire.

Chicago has been on a bit of a hot streak since acquiring Bastian Schweinsteiger from Manchester United In March. However coming off of two consecutive losses, the Fire seem to be struggling as of late. A perfect opportunity for Los Angeles, who has had plenty of struggles of their own to turn the tides.

Welcoming back Gyasi Zardes to the starting lineup was a positive note early in the game but not much else went well for the Galaxy in the first half.

An 11th minute foul by Jelle Van Damme on Fire striker Nemanja Nikolic in the box gifted a penalty to David Accam and the Fire. Things would continue to spiral downward from here.

Minutes after the opening goal great buildup from Chicago finds Nikolic who blows a shot right by Galaxy keeper Brian Rowe who had come off his line to make a play.

Then things just got strange for Los Angeles. Van Damme was subbed off in the 32nd minute and many began to wonder if the Galaxy’s strongest defender was suffering from an injury. Rather, it was a bold decision by Manager Curt Onalfo to remove the defender to shake things up.

Removing your best defender when trailing 2-0 is definitely a questionable move. But the strangeness of the night wasn’t quite over for the Galaxy. In the 38th minute Jermaine Jones took a ball to the head and immediately hit the ground. Jones was down for a bit but then got up on his own accord and walked off. After returning to the field for less than a minute of play he dropped to the ground again and what many thought were concussion symptoms troubling him, ended up actually being an issue with his knee. This forced Los Angeles to use their 2nd substitute of just the first half.

Heading into the half things were not looking good for the home town team. In the 56th minute things took quite a turn in favor of the Galaxy.

A goal from an unlikely source, defender Daniel Steres got things back on track. It didn’t take much longer for his club to do it once again, but this time from a more likely candidate.

Dos Santos punched home his second goal of the MLS season to tie things up.

After the Dos Santos equalizer Los Angeles had time left to try and win the game, but they wouldn’t be able to capitalize. Some close calls late in the game for both teams made it exciting down to the finish but this one would finish up a 2-2 draw.

A thrilling game for Los Angeles fans that have not had very much to cheer for so far this season. While a win definitely would’ve excited fans more, after trailing 2-0 early a draw isn’t too bad of a result.

A problem for the Galaxy is that things will only get tougher from here. New York Red Bulls are up next at Red Bull Arena on Sunday May 14th.
