Galaxy Earn Tough Draw In Philly 2-2

Galaxy

Oh the fun of a midweek match.

After winning against the New England Revolution on Sunday afternoon in Los Angeles the Galaxy went cross-country to Philadelphia and were faced with the challenge of taking on the number three team in the eastern conference who entered the contest with 13 points. The Galaxy on the other hand sat second in the west with 18 points of their own.

What fun would Manager Bruce Arena be if he didn’t fiddle with the lineup a bit before every game?

The return of Captain Robbie Keane into the starting lineup was a welcome sight but no Brian Rowe in-goal and the first start of the season for Leonardo looked troubling at first glance. In the case of Dan Kennedy, troubling was putting it nicely.

Kennedy was signed by the Galaxy this last offseason in an effort to bring in an ex-Chivas USA player that Arena loved during the old grudge matches the two sides used to have. Kennedy is now 33, and the rust of a keeper that hasn’t played yet this season in MLS showed. A quick fourth minute goal off of some defensive miscues scooted right by him. And then in the 69th minute…maybe hold on to the ball next time?

Moving on from Kennedy, some things for the Galaxy did go right in this one. Most of those things happened in the first half and very early in the second. What was maybe the best team play of this MLS season led to goal number one for the Galaxy and defender Robbie Rogers was the one who finished it off after some gorgeous passing from Keane and Giovani Dos Santos.

Mike Magee then decided to get in on the action scoring his 4th goal of the season early on in the second half with a great shot.

So here are the takeaways from tonight’s matchup.

  1. Brian Rowe is absolutely going to remain the starter. The only reason he didn’t start tonight was to get some rest, so breathe easy, he isn’t benched.
  2. The Galaxy attack is still alive. Scoring 2 goals on the road in a hostile environment like Philadelphia is an accomplishment. This isn’t the same old struggling Union, that young defense can play. Not to mention the way the Galaxy were scoring. Look up teamwork in the dictionary and you might just see a continuous replay of that first Los Angeles goal from tonight.
  3. The Galaxy’s midweek lineup needs some work. Kennedy struggled, Leonardo was partly the reason that first Union goal went in and Baggio Husidic may have been the worst of the three tonight.

Moving forward the Galaxy have 19 points and are sitting at second in the tough Western conference. The next game is the always fun Cali Clasico against the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday May 22nd. A weekend off for Los Angeles may be just what this team needs to recover after a very quick turnaround this week.
