Galaxy comeback falls short in 2-1 loss to SKC

After back-to-back 4-0 losses against Toronto FC and Atlanta United, the LA Galaxy needed to bounce back. Its game against Sporting Kansas City was that chance.

Instead, it was the same old story for the Galaxy, who lost 2-1 to SKC in Kansas City on Sunday. LA fought back in the second half but could not find an equalizer to earn a point on the road.

The Galaxy started with a unique XI as Gyasi Zardes got the start at right back. Playing there would give the Galaxy speed on the right flank.

Sporting KC nearly broke through in the eighth minute down the right wing, but the flag was up for offside.

LA got a chance as well through Giovani dos Santos but the Mexican international could not convert.

SKC got the breakthrough in the 18th minute when Galaxy defender Michael Ciani lost track of SKC’s Daniel Salloi, who got in front of the newest Galaxy defender and finished into the bottom corner to put the home side up 1-0.

The warm Kansas City day forced the sides to take a hydration break in the 30th minute.

Sporting KC doubled its lead in the 36th minute as Diego Rubio tapped home a goal after setting up the first goal. The Galaxy’s backline was completely split open on the through ball to set up the goal.

At halftime, the Galaxy trailed SKC 2-0.

LA seemed to have scored early on in the second half through Gio dos Santos, but he was called offside. The replay showed that Dos Santos was wrongly called offside.

Alessandrini had a chance cleared off the goal line but moments later, he had another chance from a free kick in the 58th minute.

He stepped up, curled it around the goal and got the Galaxy back in the game at 2-1. That goal puts the Frenchman into double digits for goals and assists, joining New England’s Lee Nguyen as the only players with double digit assists and goals.

LA continued to push but struggled to break through for an equalizer.

With the six minutes of stoppage time, SKC held on to its 2-1 lead and took all three points.

The Galaxy next take on the Houston Dynamo on Sept. 27.
