Galaxy Close Out Season With A Whimper
- Updated: October 22, 2017
Sunday Major League Soccer had their always popular match-day, where all teams play at the same time. All clubs played their final regular season games at 1 PM PST Sunday afternoon.
While many clubs were keeping an eye on the table during the madness to see if they could sneak into the playoffs or maybe earn a better seeding, Galaxy fans were hoping for something they never have before. Just don’t finish last.
Things got off to a quick start for Los Angeles against FC Dallas. Newly acquired Michael Ciani got on the end of a corner from Romain Alessandrini and headed the ball home putting the Galaxy up 1-0 just one minute into the game.

Ciani and the Galaxy seemed to be thriving in the role of playing spoilers. A loss for Dallas meant the once favorite to win MLS Cup club would be ousted from the MLS playoffs. But soon after the Ciani goal, Dallas started to gain momentum. And it must’ve been a lot of momentum because as soon as they got it rolling they never let up.
Dallas would go on to score 5 consecutive goals. Each more embarrassing than the last for the club wearing blue. Roland Lamah got their first in the 37th and he would get another in the 49th. Dallas defender Matt Hedges punched home a header in the 41st and Michael Barrios rocketed one by Clement Diop in the 68th.
The worst of the day for the Galaxy though came in the 73rd minute. Diop has been a laughably bad example of goalkeeping for Los Angeles this season and as if his day wasn’t bad enough having allowed 4 goals, it’s the 5th goal he didn’t allow that must’ve hurt the worst. Diop ran off his line at a charging Kellyn Acosta and took him out in the box. Diop was immediately given a red card and dismissed from the game leaving Brian Rowe with his mess, left to stop a penalty from Mauro Diaz. He did not. Dallas went up 5-1 on the penalty.
That 5-1 scoreline would hold until the final whistle.
This was historically bad year for LA Galaxy and this final game was actually a perfect representation of what supporters have had to deal with. For the first time in club history Los Angeles finished dead last in Major League Soccer.
We can all only hope for sweeping changes this offseason that result in a better product on the pitch next season.
