Galaxy Captain Van Damme Transferred
- Updated: August 18, 2017
In what has become a highly anticipated move LA Galaxy and their Capatain Jelle Van Damme have parted ways after just two seasons.
Van Damme, joined the club for the 2016 season and quickly became a fan favorite for his physical play and how quickly he immersed himself in to the culture of Los Angeles soccer. In his first season the Belgian international contributed even more than the club could have anticipated as he was named an MLS All-Star and was in the running for the MLS’ defender of the year award.
This season however Van Damme, like the club, has struggled on the field. Many wondered why he suddenly began to struggle before finding out the 33 year-old Center Back has been having some family issues that saw his wife and kids move back to Belgium. In recent interviews Van Damme openly talked about how he missed his children and how he had informed clubs back in Belgium of his desire to return home.
After much speculation over the last week it looks as if Van Damme has gotten his wish.

In return the Galaxy received $235,000 from Antwerp F.C. according to Kevin Baxter of the LA Times. While that may seem like a small number, Los Angeles clearly had a player that was no longer happy in his current situation and wanted to oblige his wishes to return home given the situation.
LA have not been quiet on the transfer market when it comes to filling the void Van Damme will be leaving either. Michael Ciani, a current free agent whom captained FC Lorient in France last season is a target that has seemingly picked up traction as of late and would plug right in to that Center Back position.
Sources say Michael Ciani deal to #LAGalaxy is imminent, will be finalized by end of day, & Jelle Van Damme has played his last game w/ LA.

On behalf of CaliSportsNews I’d like to wish Van Damme the best of luck at his new club and want to thank him for all he has given to the club over the last two seasons. Hopefully the Galaxy will be able to rebound with a solid player to fill his spot in the long run.
