Quick Summary:

On Sunday, the San Diego Chargers hosted the winless Oakland Raiders for what could be considered a must win for the bolts especially considering their current desperation mode to get back into the playoff picture following a stretch of recent losses.

Like it or not, this match-up would be a defensive battle between AFC West foes as this one would come right down to the end. In fact, the Raiders, at one point, would have 8 straight punts on offense with 5 of the 9 being a three-and-out.

With the Chargers up 13-6 with just 1 minute left in the game, the Raiders had to try to make their way down the field with no timeouts and score a touchdown. The Raiders would be unsuccessful and the Chargers would win 13-6 at home improving their record to 6-4.

Game Recap:

To start off the game, the Raiders would have the ball but it would not be for long as they would fumble on the very first play of the game giving the Chargers great field position  right away. The Chargers would take advantage of this and, after just two plays, score a touchdown on a 22-yard pass to Malcom Floyd to give the bolts the lead, 0-7.

Following a couple of punts by both sides, the Raiders would finally to get a little bit of rhythm as they would net a 8-play drive for 47 yards but would have to settle for a 42-yard field goal try by Sebastian Janikowski which would be good. Score is now 3-7 at the end of the 1st quarter.

A few more three-and-outs by both sides finally lead to the Chargers putting together an 11-play drive for 52 yards but, like the Raiders, would only end up in a short field goal try from 23 yards out by Nick Novak which would be good making the score 3-10 late in the second quarter.

The Chargers would get another opportunity to put points up on the board before the end of the 1st half as they would put themselves in position for another field goal try, this time, from 48 yards out which would not be good keeping the score 3-10 going into halftime.

With the second half under way, the next ones to put numbers on the scoreboard would be the Chargers with, again, another field goal by Novak, this time, from a deep 52 yards which would be successful making the score, 3-13.

In the 4th quarter, the Raiders would have to score either a field goal or a touchdown to keep themselves in the game. They would do exactly this with another field goal to make the score, 6-13 with just four minutes left in the game.

The Raiders would use all 3 timeouts on the following Chargers’ possession and would get the ball back with just 1 minute left in the game. The Raiders just could not come up with anything and would fall 6-13 to the Chargers.

Notes:

Both teams would struggle on 3rd down conversions for the game with the Raiders being 3 for 15 and the Chargers being 4 for 15. The Raiders have been struggling on both sides of the ball all year and the Chargers have been struggling for just the past couple weeks. For the Chargers, this is just not the time you want to let up on the gas pedal as you make your push for the postseason.

Luckily, the Chargers came out with a victory, primarily, thanks to their defense. The Chargers host the St.Louis Rams next week at 4:05ET and, hopefully, the Charger offense can return to their past prominence going against a pass defense ranked 20th in the NFL.
