Felix Hernandez improved to 5-0 and the Seattle Mariners beat the Los Angeles Angels 3-2 in game one of the series. Tonight’s loss marks the Halos fourth in a row.
Hernandez got the start for the Mariners and was excellent as usual. He pitched 7 innings allowing 6 hits and 1 run, while striking out 8. He earned his fifth win of the season. He also put his name in the history books. He now has 113 starts of 7+ innings and 1 earned run or fewer for the Mariners. The legend Sandy Koufax had 112 of those games. Pretty good company to be in right?
For the Angels Matt Shoemaker was on the bump. He pitched 7.1 innings allowing 4 hits and 3 runs while striking out 10. He picked up the loss, his 2nd of the season.
Chicks dig the long ball. All four runs in tonight’s game came off of solo shots. Nelson Cruz hit his 14th home run of the season in the 7th inning. This gave the Mariners an early 1-0 lead. Logan Morrison followed with a solo shot of his own and heading into the bottom half of the inning the Mariners lead 2-0.
Matt Joyce joined the home run party with his first of the year. He solo shot cut into the lead 2-1.
In the 8th inning Seth Smith hit a solo shot, his 2 of the season. The Mariners held a 3-1 advantage heading into the 9th. Carson Smith pitched a clean 8th inning for Seattle. Fernando Rodney came on in the 9th.
David Freese hit a solo shot to center, his fifth of the year and the Angels cut the lead to 3-2. That was all she wrote though as the comeback was cut short.
The Angels and Mariners will continue their series tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. PST.
