Entering the World of Unusual Sports
- Updated: October 21, 2017
Many sports such as soccer and basketball are hugely popular and played all over the globe on a daily basis but here at CaliSports News we like to cover all aspects of sport so for a bit of fun we thought we would take a look at some of the most unusual sports that can be found throughout the world. This post will cover everything from hybrid sports to the just plain wacky games that exist all over the world so here are some bizarre examples of wacky sports that are played across the globe.
Ostrich Racing
Yes, that’s right, ostrich racing does exist and you can put this one firmly in the bizarre camp. These massive birds can reach distances of 43 miles an hour with their legs able to reach up to 16 feet in a single stride. As you might have guessed, people sit on top of ostriches and race them around a track and the idea for this sport was originally conceived in Africa and it may seem difficult to believe but the sport has a long and distinguished history. It will definitely make you laugh so give it a quick Google search for more info.
Underwater Hockey
This game is exactly what it sounds like – a game of hockey underwater. It was apparently invented in the UK way back in 1954 and believe it or not, it has gone onto become a globally-played phenomenon with the aim of the game to move the puck from the bottom of a swimming pool into the opposing team’s goal. The game has a world governing body known as the CMAS and there is even a world championship that is held in Canada. There are also international competitions too so it really is played by thousands of people all over the world.
Wife Carrying
You could have been forgiven for thinking that this post would contain ideas such as bingo-soccer but yes, Wife Carrying is a sport. This activity originated in Finland and steadily made its way to North America around 1999. The sport as you can probably guess involves carrying a woman through an obstacle course against other teams. If the male drops his partner then 5 seconds is added on to their finishing time. The team with the fastest time wins. Simple stuff really.
Cheese Rolling
This is arguably our favorite one yet and anyone can play Cheese Rolling. All you need is a hill and a roll of cheese. Then you can grab your friends and climb to the top of the hill. The next step is to toss the cheese down the hill and chase after it. The first person to make it to the bottom wins the cheese and this sport is played in the UK with a tournament taking place every year in Gloucester in England. This one is actually pretty fun and probably the most viable out of all of our unusual sports on this list.
