The Effects Of The Chargers Move To Los Angeles
- Updated: January 12, 2017
After the smoke has cleared, and the fans of San Diego woke up to the news of the Chargers relocating to Los Angeles, the big question is what now for San Diego?
The team ownership and the city of San Diego were in a 16-year battle to keep the team. Dean Spanos wanted a brand new stadium in the downtown area, next to Petco Park. The city did not want to build a stadium and they did not try to upgrade Qualcomm stadium. So, who’s to blame? there are both winners and losers in this.
The big winner is the team, the move to Los Angeles is to guarantee the team of playing in the second biggest media market in the country and more exposure. The loser in this is the fans of San Diego, who have been loyal to the Chargers for years. On several sports talk shows around the country, the fans of San Diego feel as though they have dealt a bad hand. The city now joins a long list of pro teams that moved on and abandoned their loyal fanbase for financial gains.
“If you build it they will come,” a famous quote from the movie Field Of Dreams, the Chargers played their games in a very out-of-date stadium outside of the city in Mission Valley. The move for the team gives them more stability and a better location at the new stadium in Inglewood after it’s completion in 2019.
For the next couple of seasons, the team will play at the 30,000 seated StubHub Center, formerly the Home Depot Center soccer stadium and home of the LA Galaxy on the campus of Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson California. The biggest question is the fanbase, and will they stay loyal or move on from the team, that’s the biggest question for the Los Angeles Chargers right now.
