On Friday May 27th, in the city of Toronto, ON, Los Angeles Kings’ superstar Drew Doughty was inducted into the Portuguese Canadian Walk of Fame at the 4th annual PCWOF event, ceremony and dinner gala.
The Walk of Fame, which also has the New York Islander’s John Tavares and pop singer Nelly Furtado already inducted, is located at Camoes Square at the corner of College and Crawford street.
As publicized on the official website it is stated that,
“Our Mission is to honour Portuguese-Canadians for outstanding achievements that have served to inspire and instill pride in our community, and recognize contributions of Portuguese people in Canada.”
As a fellow Portuguese Canadian myself, (I was born here in Canada but my parents are from the Portuguese Azores islands) and a die-hard Los Angeles Kings and Drew Doughty fan, I am taking extra great pride in this.
Doughty, who was born in London, ON Canada, has both a Portuguese and a British background as his maternal grandparents, Fatima and Eduardo immigrated to Canada from Portugal over 50 years ago. With two Stanley Cup victories, two Olympic Gold Medals, a World Junior Gold Medal and three Norris Trophy nominations for NHL defenseman of the year, Doughty was the perfect candidate to be honored with an induction to this prestigious Walk of Fame.
Congratulations to Drew Doughty and everyone else for this fantastic and honorable achievement and for making the Portuguese Canadian community proud!
Speaking of being proud, headlining the PCWOF event with a concert was the talented and popular, (especially within the Portuguese community) band “NELZ”, who’s lead singer Nelson “Nelz” Medeiros just happens to be my cousin and the bassist Mark “Flash Johnson” Costa is a long time friend of mine. Congratulations to them for playing at such an important event and for putting on such an amazing and entertaining performance! For those interested, you can find out about, contact and/or book “NELZ” on Facebook here and here or subscribe to their YouTube channel here! Check them out!
