Donovan Scores As Galaxy Draw In KC 2-2

Galaxy

The Los Angeles Galaxy traveled to Kansas City Sunday afternoon hoping to put themselves alone as second place in the Western Conference.

Sitting the red-hot Giovani Dos Santos was an interesting strategy from Galaxy Manager Bruce Arena and it would effect the club’s energy in this game.

The first half was all Sporting as they outshot Los Angeles 14 to 1 and seemingly had all of the momentum throughout the half. As Arena would say though, the stats don’t mean anything only the score does.

The Galaxy held on to a 1-0 lead at the end of the first half thanks to a great cross from Emmanuel Boateng that wound up in a perfect spot for heading-master and super sub Alan Gordon.

The momentum in this game though was all pointing towards KC at the end of the half and it seemed only a matter of time before they were able to punch one in. A 50th minute header from Jacob Peterson who had plenty of the same opportunities in the first half ended up in the back of the net to knot things up at 1.

The scorching September heat in Kansas City that lead to water breaks in each half left the Galaxy looking gassed. Dom Dwyer would take advantage of just that as right back Saad Abdul-Salaam made a great run and put one through the midfield to Dwyer who knocked a shot to the left of Galaxy keeper Brian Rowe giving Sporting a 2-1 lead in the 69th minute.

Trying to regain some energy Arena would make a double substitution in the 74th bringing on Baggio Husidic and Landon Donovan. What a massive substitution this would wind up being for his squad.

Donovan brought all the energy the Galaxy needed as just one minute later in the 75th, the Galaxy legend drove home his first goal since returning from retirement.

Just like that this one was tied up at 2. With shots, possession and pretty much everything else favoring Sporting KC the Galaxy used to remainder of the clock running out time. Amidst some boos from the Sporting faithful Los Angeles would be able to hold on and get the draw in a game that honestly they had very little business being close in.

A draw on the road in a tough Kansas City stadium and atmosphere Sunday is a result Galaxy fans should be pleased with. The club will head back home next Sunday to take on bitter rival Seattle. This draw will put the Galaxy in lone possession of second place in the Western Conference with 48 points, just one ahead of the Colorado Rapids.
